In the rest of the galaxy, patron species who uplift others to sentience require that the new client species serve them as indentured servants for thousands of generations. The Streaker discovers something of great interest to the entire galaxy, and unfortunately their message home is intercepted and read along the way - and the galaxy isn't a friendly place to humanity (and dolphins and chimps). The book follows the crew of the Streaker, a starship from Earth - but it isn't crewed by humans! Instead, its the first ship captained and crewed by dolphins, who humanity has 'uplifted' by helping to accelerate their evolution (along with chimps). It's also nice to take a break from modern sci-fi and read a book where humans are the unapologetic good guys fighting against the institution of galactic slavery. The story is gripping, funny, and full of interesting, novel ideas. Won both the Hugo and the Nebula in 1984 - so I'm certainly not the only one who loved it!
